This year will be the 5th anniversary for the presentation of this award by The Museum of Political Corruption. On October 28th, the MPC will be honoring Oscar award-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney for his work in exposing social injustice.

Previous winners have included Jane Mayer, 2020 (New Yorker Magazine), Jim Heaney, 2019 (Investigative Post), Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, 2018 (NY Times), and Susanne Craig, 2017 (NY Times),

NELLIE BLY

The award is named for Nellie Bly (born Elizabeth Jane Cochran, 1864 – 1922), the intrepid 19th century reporter best known for her 1887 exposé relating the deplorable conditions at New York's infamous Blackwell's Island Asylum for the mentally ill. The Nellie Bly Award was inspired by an event the following year when Bly went undercover as a lobbyist and traveled to Albany to expose widespread corruption in New York State. She demonstrated it was possible to "purchase" the state legislature to pass or kill any bill (for $1,250). Rather than pay the sum, Bly returned to her paper, Pulitzer's New York World, to write about her experience.

Through this award, the Museum of Political Corruption honors investigative reporters and their dedication to exposing corruption and injustice.

Academy-award winner Alex Gibney has been called “the most important documentarian of our time” by Esquire Magazine.  Gibney’s work often centers on themes of corruption and social justice.  In addition to a 2008 Academy Award for Taxi to the Dark Side, Gibney has won multiple Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, the International Documentary Association’s Career Achievement Award, and in 2015, Gibney received the first ever Christopher Hitchens Prize.
